LTO Penalty for Late Registration 2026 After Due Week/Month

LTO Penalty for Late Registration

The Land Transportation Office has set a month-wise vehicle registration and renewal schedule for ease of operation. However, this rule confuses many motorists, and they miss the renewal schedule. As a result, they must face an LTO Penalty for Late Registration and other serious consequences.

The LTO Registration Rules are very strict in the Philippines. Every motorist (vehicle owner) must renew their vehicle registration on an annual basis. It means that you have to apply for LTO registration renewal every year.

When to Renew LTO Registration

The LTO has set a vehicle registration renewal schedule based on the last digit and second last digit of the vehicle plate number. The last digit indicates the renewal month and the second last digit indicates the renewal week.

In order to understand the renewal schedule system, you must check the month table and the week table that I am sharing here. These tables will help you find when you need to renew registration of your vehicle as per LTO Rules.

7 or 8Third Week (15th to 21st Date)
9 or 0Fourth Week (22nd to Last Date)

Let me explain it with an example to help you understand it better.

For Example: Your Motor Vehicle Plate Number is “DBA 4257” so let’s find out when your LTO registration renewal is due.

  • The last digit of your plate number is 7, take a look on the Month Table above and find 7, it is July month.
  • The second last digit of your plate number is 5, take a look on the Week Table above and find 5, it is Second Week.
  • So, your vehicle registration renewal is due on second week of July every year. You must renew LTO Registration of your vehicle in 2nd week of July i.e. any working day from 8th July to 14 July, both days included.

So, this is how you can find out the LTO Registration Renewal Month and Week for your vehicle or any other motor vehicle.

What If I miss the LTO Registration Renewal

The LTO recommends that every vehicle owner register their vehicle and renew the registration on time. If you miss the LTO registration renewal week and/or month, then you are liable to pay LTO Penalties for Late Registration as per rules.

During emergency situations like technical issues, natural disasters and Covid-19 like pandemics, the LTO announces an Update to inform that there will be Zero Penalty for late registration.

If there is such an announcement from LTO then you can renew your vehicle registration late without paying any penalty.

How Much is LTO Penalty for Late Registration?

The LTO Authority charges a penalty for late registration based on how long the vehicle remains unregistered

#1. Late Registration within Same Month

You have missed your vehicle registration renewal in the assigned week but you remember it now and you apply for LTO registration in the same month. In this situation, the delay period is low and the penalty is ₱200 for a car and ₱100 for a motorcycle.

#2. Late Registration from 1 Month to 12 Months (within 1 Year)

Here you have missed both the registration week and the registration month. But you still have to register your vehicle with LTO and you want to apply for LTO registration renewal. In this situation i.e. after one month to twelve months, you must pay the 50% of MVUC fee on your vehicle. (MVUC stands for Motor Vehicle User’s Charge).

For Example: Your car registration is due on 2nd week of July but you forgot to do it in July and now you want to apply for LTO Registration in August and your car MVUC is ₱2000. In this situation, you are liable to pay 50% more of MVUC as a penalty for late registration. So, the penalty will be ₱1000 that you must pay to the LTO as per rules.

#3. Late Registration beyond 1 Year

It is not the situation of forgetting, it is negligence. If you do not renew your vehicle registration for one year from the due date then you are liable to pay high amount of penalty based on your situation.

There are two situations in this category, let me explain them one-by-one.

[A] Late Registration beyond 1 Year without Apprehension

If you were never caught for a violation during the period of 1 year when your vehicle was unregistered, you are liable to pay 50% of MVUC as penalty for late registration plus the cost of registration renewal for one time.

[B] Late Registration beyond 1 Year with Apprehension

If you were caught for a violation during the period of 1 year or more when your vehicle was unregistered, you are liable to pay 50% of MVUC as penalty for late registration plus the cost of vehicle registration renewal for each year when registration was due but you did not do it.

Can I Renew My Vehicle Registration in Advance?

Yes, you can renew your vehicle registration in advance up to 2 months (60 days) before the due week/month. In order to avoid last minute rush and have peace of mind, many vehicle owners prefer to do LTO registration in advance.

If your car registration is due for renewal in the next 1-2 months, I recommend that you apply for LTO registration now. The new validity of vehicle registration will start after the current registration expires and you will remain safe from penalties and impoundment-like consequences.

That’s All:
